BioHorizons Implants now at the Fountain Dental Practice!

I am very pleased to announce I will now be placing Biohorizons Implants at the Fountain Dental Practice.

I have been training in placing Biohorizons implants over the last year, placing implants with implantologist Manish Bose at his practice Ikon Dental Suite in Ealing, as well as completing a comprehensive course of training in the theory of dental implantology.

Dental implants are small metal screws made of medical grade titanium, which are placed into the jaw bone, and support an artificial tooth or teeth. They are now very often the treatment of choice for patients with missing teeth. Previously the only options were removable dentures or bridges. Many patients do not like to wear dentures. Bridges have the disadvantage of requiring the teeth either side of the gap to be cut down to allow the bridge to be seated on top. Therefore bridges are more destructive to the surrounding teeth.

The implant placement process is quite straightforward. A local anaesthetic injection is given, similar to what you would need for a filling or tooth extraction. With the anaesthetic working you should not feel any discomfort as a small hole is prepared to place the implant. Usually a small healing cap is placed on top of the implant for a few weeks to allow healing. Then a dental impression is taken and sent to the laboratory for a tooth to be fitted onto the implant. If the implant is at the front of the mouth there are various option for cosmetic temporary teeth during the implant healing phase.

Here is an example of an implant I placed recently, shown on an x-ray. After a few weeks of healing the tooth part will be placed on top.

The ideal time to place a dental implant is a few weeks or months after having a tooth out. If left too long the bone that was once supporting the tooth shrinks away and it then becomes more difficult to place an implant. Although an implant can usually still be placed it may mean that additional procedures such as bone grafting are required.

If you think you might be interested in having a dental implant why not book an appointment with me to discuss it further. I offer free consultations to new patients so they have a chance to meet me, see the practice, and talk through the kind of treatment they might be interested in.
