Choosing the Right Mouthwash

Mouthwash is more than just a breath freshener. When used correctly, it can support your daily oral hygiene routine by reducing bacteria, preventing cavities and soothing gums.. But with so many options on the market, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming.

Here’s a breakdown of the different types of dental mouthwash and how to decide which is best for your needs.

1. Cosmetic Mouthwash (Breath Fresheners)
Best for: Temporary fresh breath
Cosmetic mouthwashes are designed primarily to control bad breath. They:
Mask odor with flavoring agents
Provide a short-term fresh feeling
Do not actively treat oral health problems
These are ideal if you need a quick refresh before a meeting or social event, but they don’t replace brushing and flossing.

2. Fluoride Mouthwash
Best for: Cavity prevention
Fluoride mouthwash helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect against tooth decay. It’s especially helpful for:
People prone to cavities
Children (as recommended by a dentist)
Patients with braces
Those with dry mouth
Fluoride rinses are often recommended by dental professionals as part of a preventive care routine.

3. Antiseptic Mouthwash for daily use
Best for: Reducing bacteria and plaque
Antiseptic mouthwashes contain ingredients such as chlorhexidine (Corsodyl Daily), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), or essential oils that kill bacteria in the mouth.
One well-known example is Listerine, which uses essential oils to help reduce plaque and gingivitis.
These rinses can help with:
Gingivitis
Plaque buildup
Persistent bad breath caused by bacteria

4. High strength Antiseptic Mouthwash
Best for: Short-term use to reduce gum inflammation/bleeding or aid healing of ulcers or surgical sites.
Corsodyl Original contains a higher strength of chlorhexidine than Corsodyl Daily and is intended for short-term use of around 2 weeks twice daily. Overuse causes brown staining on the teeth although this can be cleaned off my your dentist or hygienist. Over-use may also damage the good bacteria in your gut.

5. Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) Mouthwash
Best for: Relieving dry mouth symptoms
These mouthwashes are specially formulated to:
Moisturize oral tissues
Stimulate saliva production
Protect against decay caused by reduced saliva
They’re particularly helpful for:
Older patients with dry mouth
Patients on certain medications
Individuals undergoing cancer treatment
